Gcse question
Reflections in surfaces such as water, mirror glass, windows and metallic objects are sometimes recorded by photographers and filmmakers to create distorted images or to frame a view. Lee Friedlander has photographed images reflected in the wing mirrors of cars and shop windows. Naoya Hatakeyama used reflections on water to explore views of Tokyo in his river series. Images containing reflections have also been used as the basis for GIF animations and film loops.

Lee friedlander
Lee Friedlander is a american photographer and he was born 14th July 1934. He is currently 82.
His photographs include car wing mirrors and reflections in store windows and in the reflections it shows people. His series of photos are called 'social landscape'. Friedlander did many photos of Reflections and most of his pictures are in black and white. This gives the photos a vintage and unique atmosphere. He studied photography at the Art Centre College of Design in Pasadena, California. His early work was influenced by Eugène Atget, Robert Frank, and Walker Evans. He was won many awards for his work. He evolved an influential and often imitated visual language of social 'urban landscape' it inclues shop windows, car wingmirrors and structures frames. In most of his photos they are desaturated which makes it have a vintage and old theme. He photographs various reflections in all three of these photos. The first photo is photographing a car wingmirror which shows a landscape looking straight forward and in the mirror looking backwards.

GCSE Statement Proposal. AO3
The sub theme I have chosen is Reflections. I intend to investigate Reflection photographers further to help pin-point my idea I will begin first looking at car reflections photographs and trying to work out how I can do a photoshoot of a photographers style. I will take photos in the car and include the wing mirror to reflect what is behind it. It is showing what is in front of the car but also you can see what’s behind it at the same time.
The context of my work is based on firstly the photographer Lee Friedlander.
I was influenced by his car photographs which show you the world from the front but also the back at the same time. I am also interested in Marco Brittos work.
My ideas were inspired by Lee Friedlander and car reflections photos. I like them because the car has a lot of places that reflect off and a car and can get you anywhere around the world but the reflection is still on the car but could be anywhere in the world.
The main formal elements I am in interesting in exploring further are texture and color. I like exploring texture because I think it’s interesting how you can create different textures in different parts of the photo. I also like color, whether it’s bright color or subtle dark similar colors. In my opinion Lee Friedlander creates texture in some of his car reflection photos
I have been inspired to use these elements because Lee Friedlander uses it by taking a photo in a moving car and the outside is all fuzzy and bumpy texture whereas the inside is perfectly focused. Lees color in this photos are all mostly black and white but the wing mirror is the natural color. He also uses mainly subtle dark colors.
In Lee Friedlander work I think the overall mood is a quite spontaneous, adventurous. It makes me want to go out exploring the world and curious to the surroundings. I like this mood because it reflects the world and natural reflections.
I want to create a intriguing and vintage atmosphere/mood. I also would like to create a mood which is similar to Marco Britto and a bit sinister mood. Marco Brittos photos look like a horror film street.
I intend to do this by using bland colors but then brighter colors in the focal point to stand out and really draw the viewers’ attention to the main point in the picture.
I want to do this because I want my style to be as close to Lee’s as possible. I also want to create a happier mood than Lees by create the focal point with aperture and color.
The process/processes I am interested in using in my work are finding a clear puddle which reflect a lampost light out of it. I will then upload the photos onto photoshop and play with the contrast, brightness and vibrance. I will brighten the photo up to make sure i have a clear focal point. I may also take photos out og the car wingmirror to show reflections behind me.
I want to explore mood in my own work by using color and texture. I will do this by creating dull natural colours throughout the images but the focal point will be bright orange /yellow.

Shoot 1
WWW: I think in this shoot i have successfully done a shoot in the style of fried lander because i have use this idea of the car wing mirror. It has some many links to Lee because i used carwingmirror and photographed the content behind it. To achieve this image I got insidethe car and took a photo of the wingmirror which reflected some houses and another car. It showed a landscape looking forward and backwards.
EBI: I create a photo that was not as boring and could included some interesting colour that stands out making the photo more interesting to look at and have some links with Friedlander.

Marco britto
Marco Britto is an photographer, he has many photos on reflections in puddles. He uses colors, texture and light in his photos. In all the pictures it looks like he turns the contrast up in colour to make it more vibrant. Also in these photos he uses water and mostly similar colours. He also takes lots of photos at night which have a good effect because the colours stand out. In the puddle he reflects out a object or a building. Within all these three examples he shows some sort of nature and buildings which reflect out of the water/puddle. He comes from Sao Luis, Maranhao, Brazil. He focuses on producing a shoot which shows a light or landscape in a puddle reflection. In my final piece i want to try produce a photo similar to the first one.

Plan for next lesson -
Next lesson i am going to bring in a mirror and i am going to go round the school and find somewhere / something significant to take a picture of through a mirror.
Or i could also use the mirror water fountain in the middle of the school and in the reflection take a picture of the school.

Shoot two
WWW - I think i successfully found a natural reflection piece
EBI - I think if i used a mirror and a more interesting scene it will hook the viewer more. I could of also linked in with Lee Friendlander or Marco Britto. In my opoion these pictures are very simple, boring and bland. It doesnt show a great reflection or links in with anything.

shoot three
WWW - I think i have found an interesting scene and used a mirror to reflect it. I also think my photos might hook the viewer more than my other shoots. I have successfully produced a shoot linking with Friedlander.
EBI - I think if i blacked out or blurred out the background it will make sure the reader only looks at the focal point rather than the messy background. If i linked it somehow to Lee Friedlander.

Www: You have explained content well and made interesting insights into the reasons about being tourists. Is this something you made up or something you know he was meant to do. Reference him if he said it.
Ebi: You could explain further the formal elements. There are huge lines of dark grey that cross the picture, which separates the car and outside. The shape of the of the cars and building contrast against the curve of the mirror.
Student response: Next time i will explain the formal elements further. I will recognize the shapes and contrast.
I will explain more of the formal elements and link them to Lee's work, i will also thoroughly explain the shape of the photo and what kind of shape it represents.
Each Assessment Objective Roughly equals: A =18 B =15 C=12 D=10 E=8 F=5 G=4

Experimenting with photoshop.
This is a photo i have took in a shoot. I used it in the experimentation in photoshop. I like the way the water is dripping and it has all different colours emerging and the red is really strong and stands out. I brightened up the contrast and vibrance to make it all stand out.
Compare and contrast
On the left is an example of Lee Friedlanders and on the right is a photo of mine that i took and tried to relate to his techniques.
The similarities of these photos are that they both have mirrors which reflect a surrounding behind them. They both have similar shapes in them like main focal point is a circle. A difference is that Lee's photo on the left is in black and white but my photo is still in its natural colours. My photo has dull colours in the background but then the focal point is brightly coloured whereas Friedlander's piece is all black and white. Another difference is that due to the colours it makes Friendlander's photo look old and vintage but mine looks fairly new and modern. A similarity of these photos is that with both of these photos is that they both reflect the surroundings behind them when looking forward. They both involve mirrors looking one way but showing the opposite. The mood that Friedlanders photo gives me is a old, vintage and mysterious atmosphere. It makes me think of America in the 1970s. On the other hand my photo gives a mood of modern beach holidays and a jolly atmosphere.

my shoot inspired by lee friendlander and marco britto
WWW - I have included some properties of Lee friendlanders work and shown reflections. I included links with Marco Britto by showing a landscape and nature through reflections.
EBI - I edited my pictures so it looks more like Marco Brittos and made sure there was a more excited background rather than a windowsill and i used some sort of water in the reflection. Overall i need to link to more to the photographers
showing i recgonised their properties.

Sir's feedback:
Www: You have begun looking at 2 photographers and started replicating their style. There are some images that do not seem to relate to your artists, such as the bottle shoot, please remove, Ebi: Can you be more specific in your written response for experiments. For example what you did well needs to be specific, such as camera control, arrangement of object use of lights etc. Equally explain what could be improved in more detail. Does the work relate to the artist studied? In your second shoot using the round mirror look back at the artist an try to replicate how he has just the sky, also, ventur out of the house to get more interesting results.

Critical analysis of my own work
Gcse statement proposal AO3
The sub theme I have chosen is water. I intend to investigate water reflection pieces further to help pin-point my idea I will begin first looking at Marco Britto and trying to plan a shoot influenced by Friedlander and Britto. I will also look at other photographers. I want to try and achieve a piece that will have a puddle or river in and reflect a landscape out of it. I also might have a model stand over the puddle so she will be in the reflection and blur her face out.
The context of my work is based on firstly the photographer Lee Friedlander.
I was influenced by his content and colours. I like the content of his pictures of people in them and the black and white effect.
My ideas were inspired by rivers and puddles in a natural setting but reflected a landscape and people out of it. I also like the idea of taking a photo of a river or puddle then the colours of the sunset reflect in to it and make it look like there is paint in the water.
The main formal elements I am in interesting in exploring further are colour. Friedlander uses the colour of black and white in most of his photos and it makes have a vintage and old atmosphere to it. He also uses tone in the black and white effect, it is a very soft black and white tone on his photos.
Marco Britto also uses colour but it is the complete opposite to Friedlander. Britto uses bright, natural colours in his work.
I have been inspired to use these elements because I think colour and tone is a big part of their photos. It makes the photo more interesting and professional. After adding a colour and tone it also has an effect on the mood. Britto enhances his colour on his photos to make main colours look more vibrant. Whereas Friedlander has his whole photo in black and white to make his photo have a vintage mood.
I want to create a mood like Lee Friedlander’s and put my photos in black and white. I will do this by desaturating the photo and lower contrast so it has a soft tone.
The process I am interested in using in my work are taking a photo out of water reflecting a landscape or a person then I will go on Photoshop and desaturate the whole picture and make it have an soft tone. If I include a person in my work I will go onto Photoshop and blur out the face to make it interesting.
I want to explore Tone in my own work by using contrast and colour adjustments.

Shoot eight - britto inspired
WWW - I successfully produced a shoot inspired by Marco Britto and have included water and reflections. I also quite like the orange light reflecting across the water from the middle, this is the main focal point. These images links in with Marco Brittos theme of showing reflections through puddles.
EBI - I used a more better camera or took more time to focus the camera so it isn't as blurry and look all muffled. I also think it will be better if i focus on one area of the muddle as some of my photos are of the floor with no reflections.
Next time i am going to find a bigger puddle to get a more clearer picture in the puddle and reflecting a more refined, clearer landscape in the relfection.

PHOTOSHOP EDITS
In these photos I played around with the contrast and brightness to get a orangey glow in the reflection of the light. It also defines the photo and makes the ground look grainy. I like the image i have created with photo shop but the third one looks unrealistic in my opinion. Maybe next time i could try add in some features of Lee Friedlander's work like making it black and white or showing some sort of person or car in the reflections as Friedlander uses people and cars in this work sometimes. To successfully achieve this image I went on Image, then adjustments and i clicked on brightness/contrast. I then played around with the settings.
shoot 9
WWW- This links in with Marco Britto and Lee Friedlander. I have experimented with different colours on the light so the reflection is different coloured.
EBI- I photographed different angles.

Shoot 10
WWW - I have successfully produced a shoot where it relates to Marco Britto and reflects a warm, vibrant light out of the puddle. I also showed different shapes of the puddle. I also have produced a shoot where there is more than one thing to look at. I like this shoot because it also shows shapes of lines in the photo.
EBI - I tried reflecting a landscape out of the puddle for it to be more interesting and show more. Maybe next I will try produce a different puddle so its bigger and get more interesting shapes and reflections out of it. I will also make sure my photo is clear, focused and not as blurry.

Plan for final piece
For my final piece I want to try recreate a photo styled like Marco Britto but also have links with Lee Friedlander like I want to try use one of the photos above but take it then edit it to be more saturated and contrast so it stands more.

Final Evaluation
The critical elements in my work is texture and colour. I think these elements went well in my photo. I show texture around the puddle reflection on the ground which is a rough and grainy texture whereas the puddle is a smooth texture. I also think the grainy concrete makes it look more realistic.
The use of colours in my photo is important too. The image has dull natural colours all around but then it has an bright orange yellow line around it and the puddle which is the focal point. The bright yellow orange light is in the reflection. The main theme of my work is reflections which i have linked and understood in my final piece. My sub theme is water through reflections, i have also demonstarted this in my final piece too. My influences are by Marco Britto mostly in this piece. I think i have successfully linked my work with his and create a final piece linking with two photographers.
In the image i have a puddle which reflects a orange lamp post light out of, this relates to my theme because it shows reflections in water. In my opinion i like the yello lines going round the image i think they show a natural atmosphere to it. I also like the ruffled brown leafs in the picture so it looks natural and links in with the natural theme.
My work was inspired by Marco Britto and Lee friendlander . In this picture i show the same links in Marco Brittos work because i have replicated the street puddle theme. Itm also relates to Friedlander because it shows light out of the puddle.
I used colour and texture as formal elements because i think it texture makes the photo create a atmosphere to it. I also think colour creates a focal point within my final piece. There formal elements were also inspired by Marco Britto. He also shows a grainy texture on the concrete and a bright orange lamp post light.
The mood within my work is to make people that view piece feel like they're walking down a dark, horror street. I create a dark mood by using dark and dull colours throughout my image.
I made the work by firstly finding a puddle on the ground which then showed reflection out of the puddle and made sure it was all dark colours except the focal point which is the orange lampost light. After i uploaded them to photoshop and brighten up the brightness and lowered the contrast to achieve a grainy texture.
If i was going to re create this image again i would try find a bigger more shaped puddle which reflected more than a light out of it. I also will make sure i have a more focused camera and use my flash.
